BASIC SCHOOL PROGRAMS

PRIMARY AND ELEMENTARY STUDENTS

Kindergarten: I read one story to them and have a brief question and answer period about my writing. (Max. 15 min.) a class

Grades 1-2: I read one of my books then discuss the origin of the book and how some of my other book ideas came to me. I share with the students my daily work habits. My early childhood experiences that led to my writing career. Depending on the students, I talk about how a book gets published. (Approx. time: 30 -45 mins.) This includes showing slides/overheads and original materials

Grades 3-4: I read one book then discuss it. Usually it is my book, White Socks Only. After reading it, I talk about why I wrote it and how important it is for us to embrace all people. I also talk about activism. That it is our duty to speak up whenever we see something wrong. I help children sort out their feelings about differences and what makes another person different through the use of a few exercises. The session includes information on how to get ideas, the process of story development, the research techniques I use, and the difference between writing fiction and non-fiction. I show them the various steps books go through until publication by sharing my original work. (Approx. time: 45 min.) This includes showing slides/overheads and original materials.

Grades 5-6: I read one story and then discuss the ideas behind the story. Basically the same as above except in more details. With this group of students I spend more time discussing writing techniques, provide more about their own writing habits. (Approx. time: 45 min.) This includes showing slides/overheads and original materials

MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL

Grades 7-12: This is a much more writing intensive workshop. Kids are given assignments before I come to class. We not only discuss my writing but other writers and the kid=s work. I take them through the publication process from start to finish. And we also examine the structure of story.

(Approx. 50 min.) usually this must be small classes and I prefer working longer periods with students who have already expressed an interesting in writing or storytelling. This basically applies to all higher grades as well.

My Philosophy:

It is very important for me to expose children to the ideas of love, sharing and acceptance. I discuss prejudice, isolation, anger and racism in all my lectures. Students and teachers are invited to accept a challenge: make at least one friend that you ordinarily would not make. Someone you feel is totally different in race, culture and likes and dislikes is the kind of friend I want you to make. Then work hard to become intimate friends, visit each other, discuss your feelings with each other and above all else be honest about how you feel. I believe that the only way we can change the world is by speaking out against all forms of injustice and working hard to ensure friendships and peace among all peoples.

Credentials:

I'm the author of ten books for children of all ages and some 50+ articles for adults. I was a psychotherapists, hypnotherapists and stress management trainer for thirteen years before beginning a career in writing.

How Do I Schedule?

My calendar fills up 6 months to a year in advance. If you are interested in receiving more information about a visit or wish to book time on my calendar, simply contact me by phone, letter, or e-mail. Once we do set up a date, I will provide a contract to your school detailing our financial agreement.

Other suggestions:

Visits work best when children have been exposed to at least one of my books before my arrival.

It helps to send flyers home so that parents might participate and/or purchase books for school as a school fund raiser.

) .Teachers should brainstorm with students about questions they might ask. With primary children, write those questions on 3 x 5 cards and elect a class representative to give them to the author/illustrator during the Q/A portion of the program.

It helps if teachers remain in the room and avoid doing other activities like checking papers. It is not only distracting for me but for some of the children.

) Plan an autograph session and have books available. One of the best ways to turn young people into "book people" is to talk up the idea of personal libraries.

Please explain to children that I can not give books away or autograph slips of paper. I will, of course, during my session explain that I have to purchase books myself for me. However, if your school would like, I can supply a bookmark that can be copied on the book of your choice. I do need to know in advance.

Lastly, order the Educational movie from Phoenix Films, White Socks Only and I=ll discuss making a book into a film, including the differences in writing a screenplay.

Keep in mind all programs geared to specific classes at each school. SMILE!
