What Reviewers and Schools Say About Evelyn Coleman's Books

To Be a Drum...

"Although there are numerous picture books about the Middle Passage and African Slavery, few are as poetic and creative as To Be a Drum. And educational and uplifting story."

Tansy Miller, Oakland PL, Association of Children's Librarians, BayViews, CA

"An excellent addition to any home or school library, this title is especially recommended for elementary aged children but is a wonderful story for any age. "

                   G. Pritchy Smith & Deborah A. Batistic, Multicultural Perspectives

"Incredible textural collages by Aminah Lynn Robinson become the drums of Coleman's story, beating out history, beauty and a richness of movement and color."

Susie Wilde, Public Radio, WUNC 91.5 FM

The Riches of Oseola McCarty....

"Written with elegant simplicity but deeply moving and insprational, this is something different for Black History month and for easy biography assignments."

Christine Hall, Willingboro Public Library, Youth Jersey Regional Library Cooperative

"This story reads like an unbelievable fairy tale, and Daniel Minter's exceptional wood-cuts illustrate it perfectly. I dare anyone to read this book without goose bumps or tears."

Reviews for FWISD, by Phyllis Evans, Librarian, Carter Park #111

White Socks Only...

"An effective portrayal of a child's innocence and her awakening to racism."

                                                                                   Booklist

"A Powerful book about prejudice and a community pulling together and slapping bigotry in the face."

                                                         Lower Columbia Library Review Group

"A Book that should be in every school."

                                                 Ohioana Quarterly, Ohio Library Association

The Glass Bottle Tree...

"Is a courageous picture book that I recommend for older elementary school students. Coleman's book can help children talk about everything from different ways of expressing love, prejudice, and a definition of family on love, not economic circumstances.

From Susie Wilde's radio program at WUNC, Chapel Hill

The Foot Warmer and the Crow...

"The Foot Warmer and the Crow is about empowerment, patience, wisdom, intelligence and the fulfillment of a dream.

                                                                    Quarterly Black Review

"It's a welcome jolt to see a story about slavery that ends with such a satisfying peck of revenge. Older children will relish the honesty and the ironic humor, and Daniel Minter's carved and painted wood illustrations offer a satirical grotesquerie of characters.

The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"A powerful illustrations for a powerful story."

                                                                 New York Times Book Review
