HOW THE VIRTUAL AUTHOR VISIT WORKS
I believe it is important to discuss issues that effect children every day. I also believe writers have an obligation to speak truth. I am happy to supply references for my work. GO HERE to read what Teachers and Reviewers say about my books and visits. I do (four) types of Virtual Author Visits for grades 3-12. I am sorry but I do not do K-2 grades unless I am there in person. I can use H.323 equipment or we can try basic Skype or other type broadcast. BASIC VIRTUAL AUTHOR VISIT Teachers: I will meet with teacher/s at their convenience, either via, email, internet conference, telephone or videoconference anytime prior to visit. During this time any concerns, questions or goals they have in mind for their students can be discussed. This is optional and available for all sessions. STUDENTS are expected to read at least one of my books prior to Virtual visit or the teacher read at least one to the class. Questions can be sent to me prior to the visit in addition to the usual Q&A at the end. A teacher may request a longer Q&A period but it is usually 10-15 minutes. Grades 3-4: I read one book then discuss it. Usually it is my book, White Socks Only. After reading it, I talk about why I wrote it and how important it is for us to embrace all people. I also talk about activism. The truth is that it is our duty to speak up whenever we see something wrong. I help children sort out their feelings about differences and what makes another person different through the use of a few exercises. The session includes information on how to get ideas, the process of story development, the research techniques I use, and the difference between writing fiction and non-fiction. I show them the various steps books go through until publication by sharing my original work. (Approx. time: 45 min.) This includes showing slides/overheads and original materials.
Grades 5-6: I read one story and then discuss the ideas behind the story; basically the same as above except in more detail.. With this group of students I spend more time discussing writing techniques and provide more instruction regarding their own writing habits. I also talk a lot more about my own writing process. Included in this are always issues surrounding justice and bullying.(Approx. time: 45 min.) This includes showing slides/overheads and original materials MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL Grades 7-12: This is a much more intensive session. I discuss some of my work, but focus mainly on the process of writing and reading. I explore the elements of story. I also talk extensively about revision. On a personal note I also talk about issues of justice, bullying and the need to stand up for what "you" believe to be right. I also talk about the importance of writers in our society. (Approx. 50 min.) This basically applies to all higher grades as well. HOW TO DO RESEARCH FOR FICTION OR NONFICTION BOOKS People often think you do not have to do research to write fiction. I believe that research is essential for all types of fiction, historical fiction and nonfiction. During this class I discuss why it is so vital to do research and offer examples proving my point. I explain the basic procedures to follow in setting up your research questions, how to do the research, and when it is enough for your specific story. I also explore students feelings about history and research and why both go hand-in-hand in improving the quality of, not only one's reading and knowledge, but also one's life. VIRTUAL MINI-WRITING WORKSHOP I design this program based on the needs of the students. The students are given an assignment, preferably three-four weeks prior to the Virtual Visit. I expect assignments back at least three days before the Visit. Armed with the information I get from these assignments, I design a writing class that will improve their weakest points and strengthen their abilities. This includes exercises I have developed over the years to get students attuned to a more creative space in their writing. I also talk about the importance of "writing" not only for society but for one's own peace. A TWO PART-VIRTUAL WRITING WORKSHOP Designed with your student in mind, this workshop involves home assignments before the Virtual Visit. During the Visit the students are given an assignment at the end of their session that they then must submit for the second part. This is a more "personal" workshop and is designed not only to improve writing skills, but also encourage skills in conflict resolution, anger management and stress issues.
